Bullseye / USPSA

What is P.P.C.?

P.P.C. stands for the NRA “Police Pistol Combat” competition. P.P.C. had its origins in 1957/58 when the Department of Police Administration at the University of Indiana developed a handgun course that was more suited to Police training. Prior to that, Police handgun training was done “Civilian” style…one handed, single action on a Bullseye target.

P.P.C. has been an active Pistol discipline here at the DSC since the 1970s. Our P.P.C. league uses the NRA 50 Foot Indoor Police Course (a 60 round course of fire) fired on B-27R targets. This course of fire is used by a number of the local Clubs and Police Organizations that put on indoor P.P.C. Matches. These matches take place between December and April, and many of our shooters use the DSC P.P.C. League as a way to practice for these matches. P.P.C. stresses shooting fundamentals and accuracy under competitive conditions. We try to place all 60 of our shots in a 2 1/2 inch group while shooting against the clock from the various distances and positions.

The course of fire is as follows:

“A” Target

  1. 7 yds. 12 rounds in 20 seconds from a standing position
  2. 50 ft. 18 rounds in 90 seconds, consisting of:
    • 6 rounds from a kneeling position
    • 6 rounds standing, using the left hand from the left side of a barricade
    • 6 rounds standing, using the right hand from the right side of a barricade

    We then change targets.

“B” Target

  1. 50 ft. 6 rounds in 12 seconds from a standing position
  2. 50 ft. 24 rounds in 2 min. and 45 sec, consisting of:
    • 6 rounds from a sitting position
    • 6 rounds from a prone position
    • 6 rounds standing, using the left hand from the left side of a barricade
    • 6 rounds standing, using the right hand from the right side of a barricade

When shooting from the barricades, the hands can rest on the barricade, but the firearm may not touch the barricade. There are mandatory reloads during three of the four course of fire. The best possible score is 300-30x per target with 600-60x for a two target total. Our League scores have run anywhere from 200-0x for a new shooter up to 600 -50x for a few experts, with most scores in the 500s. But do not let the scores frighten you. We all had to start at the beginning at one time. New shooters are often amazed how their scores improve with practice.

Equipment needed for P.P.C. NRA rules allow .32 caliber or larger in a revolver with a maximum 6″ barrel length and .35 caliber or larger in a pistol with a 5″ maximum barrel length. Many shooters use a six shot revolver firing .38 Specials while others use 9mm, .40, or .45 caliber semi-autos. A holster (no shoulder or crossdraw holsters) is required. A minimum of 4 speedloaders or magazines are required. The speedloaders/magazines must not contain more than 6 rounds. Speedloader/magazine pouches are needed, and of course, 60 rounds of ammunition are needed for each course of fire. Ammo can be factory loaded or hand loaded, but must not be Magnum or High Speed ammo. We have MANDATORY use of Eye and Hearing protection while on the range. No dry firing anywhere in the range building, except, on the range with the range officer’s approval.

Our league has a GREAT group of shooters. Female shooters are very welcome. Our league has included female shooters in the past and the Matches we attend typically have 15 to 20 percent female shooters. The League group also includes many certified NRA instructors who are always willing to help new shooters with any questions they may have. Hopefully this has given you a better understanding of one of our clubs pistol groups. If you need additional information regarding P.P.C. you can call Bob Seidl at 586-739-2775 and/or come down to the range on a Wednesday evening and see for yourself what we are doing and ask questions.

DSC PPC LINE AND SAFETY NOTES

The turnout for PPC has been excellent and we sincerely hope it continues. With the aim of keeping everyone safe and keeping disturbances for those upstairs and on the line to a minimum, please observe the following procedures upstairs and on the line:

SAFETY NOTICE

  • NO FIREARMS ARE TO BE GRIPPED AND MOUNTED OR POINTED ON THIS FLOOR (upstairs). EXCEPTIONS ONLY UNDER DIRECT SUPERVISION OF A R.O. OR NRA INSTRUCTOR.
  • ACTIONS OPEN OR HANDGUN HOLSTERED WHEN MOVING ABOUT THE BUILDING.
  • HANDLING IS PERMITTED FOR SAFETY CHECKS, PLACEMENT IN A RACK OR HOLSTER, CLEANING OR ENCASING FOR TRANSPORT.
  • PLEASE REMAIN UPSTAIRS UNTIL YOUR LINE IS CALLED. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE SHOOTERS TO HEAR COMMANDS OR SIMPLY CONCENTRATE WHEN OTHERS ARE TALKING ON THE RANGE. OBSERVATION IS ALLOWED, BUT DO IT QUIETLY.
  • KEEP YOUR BAGS, BOXES AND EQUIPTMENT UPSTAIRS (RO’S RUNNING THE RANGE EXCLUDED). WHEN YOUR LINE IS CALLED, TAKE DOWN THE ITEMS YOU NEED TO SHOOT THE LINE.
  • FOR SAFETY AND COURTESY, WHEN YOU FINISH A STAGE AND YOUR BRASS HAS BEEN CHECKED, HOLSTER YOUR FIREARM AND STAND AT EASE UNTIL THE RANGE OFFICER SAYS THE LINE IS SAFE AND GIVES THE COMMAND TO POLICE YOUR BRASS AND EQUIPTMENT.
  • SCORE TARGETS UPSTAIRS (RO’S RUNNING THE RANGE EXCLUDED.)

Thanks for your cooperation and thanks again for shooting PPC at DSC!
